Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel’s commitment to ensuring a sustainable future for the state in his avowed interest in the next generation rather than next elections today, found expression in government’s decision to up the ante of participatory and responsive leadership, through conscious sensitization and continued investment in qualitative education.
This was the focus at the opening of the three-day workshop on leadership and behavioural ethics for prefects of public schools and a refresher course for public schools counselors in the state, which is to hold across the three senatorial districts of the state.
Starting today with schools in Uyo senatorial district at Community Secondary School, Aka, the training which drew resource persons from Center for Ethics and Leadership Development, Abuja,availed school prefects from the nine Local Government Areas of the district the opportunity of being trained on basic leadership skills, organizational skills, good academic values, task coordination, punctuality and good moral values.
Other areas of focus in the training included honesty, ability to solve problems as well as the need to stem the prevailing spate of social vices including drug abuse, cultism, pre-marital sex, pornography, truancy, vandalism, gambling and hooliganism.
The programme which availed stakeholders in education the opportunity to re-assure the students of government’s commitment to sustaining the free and compulsory education policy, also arrived at the need to encourage the establishment of functional career counseling units in all schools to help the students proffer solutions to issues that could adversely affect their productivity.
Some of the students who spoke commended Governor Udom Emmanuel for his education friendly disposition noting that his interventions through improving the quality of education in both content and discipline has not only secured for the state an advantaged listing in Nigeria’s educational endeavour, but has earned the students an enviable future.
The students recounted the confidence that Governor Emmanuel’s educational intervention has brought students of public schools in the state saying the infrastructural boost and government’s commitment in promoting science and technology to raise active participants in the ongoing industrialization policy would provide capable manpower to forestall capital flight.
The programme according to the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Education Monitoring, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, will continue in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at State College, Ikot Ekpene, while Eket Senatorial District will take its turn on Wednesday, November 8,
2017.the venue will be Government Secondary School, Afaha Eket, at 9am.
