In a bid to improve the welfare of women in her domain, the first lady of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, Mrs. Ima-Abasi Ekanem Brown has launched a Microfinance Cooperative Society called Mboho Uforo Iban Mkpat Enin, aimed at providing a platform for education and financial empowerment of women in the area.
The group was inaugurated in a ceremony attended by thousands of women at Unity Hall, Mkpat Enin Local Government Headquarters where the Chairman’s wife gave out cash as Business Expansion Support Packages to business owners totaling over one million naira, in addition to food items.
In his speech at the event, the Executive Chairman of Mkpat Enin Local Government Council, Hon. Ekanem Brown charged the women on entrepreneurship, advising them to invest their resources in economic ventures and nuture them to growth as a way of securing their future economy.
Hon. Brown, a renowned business mogul and an ICT expert extolled his wife for her interest in the development and empowerment of Mkpat Enin women.
“My wife is always brainstorming on what she can do to improve the welfare and economic situation of our women and young female adults. After months of brainstorming and searching, we discovered that this forum can enable her empower women. This business group is apolitical. The cooperative is not for myself nor my tenure, it will outlive our regime. I implore the coordinators to be selfless in their distribution of all the empowerment and not concentrate on their cronies and family members”.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Chairman’s wife, Mrs. Ima-Abasi Brown said she is floating a women empowerment scheme that will drive home the Dakkada philosophy of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration by exposing the women to the vast potentials in them and offer the women what she described as a sustaining empowerment that will outlive her tenure as first lady of Mkpat Enin, adding that the cooperative will expose women of the area to economic opportunities that abound in the area. Partnerships and finance for this project are sourced for across the globe.
“It is time to move from short term goals to long term plans that brings stability to our homes and life in general. To achieve this, we need immediate and consistent sensitization on entrepreneurship, health and general basic information”.
She revealed that “Mboho Uforo Mkpat Enin is a platform that brings Mkpat Enin women together for the purpose of trainings, discussions and seminars that provide our women with good business education and provide them start-up support packages as well as business expansion support packages”.
In their response the invitees applauded the leadership prowess of the First Lady and her commitment to improving the lives of women in the area.
Other personalities present at the event included Lady Ekaette Usip, Dr. Imeofon Udo, Mrs. Udobia, Mrs Idea Ephraim Akpan, Hon. Eno Williams and Obongawan Rose Andrew Brown, Mr Jonah who represented Mrs Ekemini Imoh who is the commissioner of the Bureau of Cooperatives and rural development in Akwa Ibom State….. To mention a few who were present at the event.
